Mother-in-law or Mother-in-love?
Whether you’re married or not, you’ll agree with us that mothers-in-law come in different flavours and varieties–the good, the bad and the ugly. From Patience Ozokwor to Joke Silva’s roles as mothers-in-law in Nollywood movies, we’ve put together a list of the ten types of mothers-in-law out there:
1. The Wicked One (Patience Ozokwor)
She deserves to be number one on the list because of how frequently she is typecast as a wicked mother-in-law.
When she’s not complaining about your cooking and cleaning, she’s comparing you to the woman she wanted your husband to marry and accusing you of bewitching her son.
2. The No-Nonsense One (Kate Henshaw)
Madam Uduak the monster-in-law (Blood sisters fans say hi). She is a no-nonsense woman who you will never be able to please no matter how hard you try.
You’re not good enough to be marrying her child but she has come to terms with it, all she asks is for you not to get in her way or make her look bad. You can do that right?
3. The Mama Bear (Joke Silva)
Remember her role in Namaste Wahala? She is the mama bear that will go to any length for her own–given the situation at hand, this may or may not include you.
If push comes to shove, she wouldn’t mind fighting for her daughter and creating problems for her son-in-law. In other words, ‘she no too dey for you’.
4. The Jaiye Jaiye One (Shola Sobowale)
Her role in Wedding Party says it all, she doesn’t even have your time, unless you intend to get in the way of her constant merriment.
She would rather spend her time enjoying herself with friends at an owambe party than be on your case.
5. The By Force Grandmas (Shaffy Bello)
Her role in Mama Drama comes to mind. If you don’t make her a grandmother nine months after the wedding, she will fight you with everything in her.
Whether you are ready or not, under her watch, you must give her grandchildren.
6. The Down-To-Earth Ones (Racheal Oniga)
In loving memory of Racheal Oniga. Remember her role in Royal Hisbiscus Hotel? She is a sweet-16 mother-in-law who doesn’t even want to grow old at all.
Spa and manicure dates are promised with this one because she knows what’s up.
7. The Fighter (Idowu Phillips)
Even if you have not recently seen her face in Yoruba movies, I bet that you will know her face in Airtel adverts. She has chosen her co-mother-in-law as her archrival and has dedicated the rest of her life to fighting and competing with her.
For the sake of peace, she and her fellow mother-in-law mustn’t be under the same roof for too long.
8. The Silent Killer (Ireti Doyle)
Remember her in “The Wedding Party”. She is a blend of the wicked one and the no-nonsense one. She is rich, elegant and has a foul mouth.
Unless you’re able to win her over, you’re for doom.
9. The Bittersweet One (Tina Mba)
Have you seen “For Maria; Ebun Pataki”? She blows hot and cold. On some days she will accommodate you (and your excesses), on other days she won’t.
10. The Crazy One (Taiwo Ajayi Lycett)
Do you remember her cameo appearance in “The Return Of The King” (King of Boys Season 2)? She puts the C in crazy.
She is the best fit for the daughter-in-law that thinks she can do and undo. Trust her to put everyone in their place because na she carry craze for head.
