A solution to Lagos’ unending Traffic congestion?
Anyone that has stayed in Lagos even if it is for one week can attest to the fact that traffic congestion is a major issue in the state. Coupled with the state of the roads in some areas, it is a deadly combination.
The Lagos State government in a bid to tackle this issue embarked on the “Lagos blue rail” project–a project might be ready for operation next year. The Lagos blu line project is a 27-kilometer rail line from Okokomaiko to Marina.
At the celebration of the launch of the last T-beam for the Blue Line Rail Mass Transit project, the Governor of Lagos State Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirmed that a test run of the Blue Line Rail will commence in December, adding that they are committed to delivering the project before the end of the year. The Governor also confirmed that the two trains that had been purchased in China for the project are expected to arrive in Lagos by October.
He mentioned that his administration is working tirelessly to meet the deadline set for the commencement of operations–which is the first quarter of 2023. He confirmed that there are plans to begin discussions with the government of Ogun state for the extension of the Blue Rail Line project to places like Agbara and Okokomaiko.
The managing director of the Lagos metropolitan transport authorities (LAMATA) Engr. Abimbola Akinajo was also present at the launch. She stated some of the major issues the state government had faced to ensure the success of the project.
According to her, plans were already being put in place to integrate the current cowry payment system used for the BRT as the payment method for the rail when it becomes operational. The idea for that is to have one single payment platform for all regulated public transportation services in Lagos State.
