Stadium 974 is the first of its kind in World Cup history

One fascinating thing about the World Cup is that we get to see the different cultures of the host country and its amazing facilities. Generally, the stadiums used for the World Cup games are always amongst the best in the world and stadium 934 is no exception.

The host country of this year’s World Cup is Qatar and the stadiums set to be used for the tournament are just breathtaking. The most mysterious of them all is Stadium 974.

Stadium 974 is going to be the first temporary stadium in World Cup history. That means that after the World cup, the stadium will be dismantled just as it was built. Fascinating right? Imagine a 40,000-capacity stadium disappearing just like that.

The Iconic Stadium 974

How the stadium was built.

974 is the international code for Qatar and 974 is the exact amount of shipping containers used to build this iconic stadium. Construction started in 2018 and by 2019 excavations were done and the construction extended into 2020.

The 974 shipping containers used for the structure can be seen all around the stadium and they are key features in the design of the stadium as they will contain certain amenities. The major structure of the stadium was designed with recycled steel. In all, Stadium 974 was cheaper to build than most World Cup stadiums in history and when it is finally dismantled, all the materials used in building the stadium will be repurposed for other projects around the world.

Most stadiums used for the World Cup this year were built with something called air-cooling technology. This technology will help sustain the temperature in the stadiums because of Qatar’s hot weather and tournament timing.

Stadium 974 on the one hand will not need this air-cooling technology because it doesn’t need it. The stadium was built so that natural ventilation will circulate, taking advantage of the stadium’s location, which is close to the seafront. \

Why the stadium was built.

Stadium 974 was built to reduce waste and set new sustainability standards. In most cases when countries want to host the World Cup, they spend a lot of money constructing grade-A stadiums that can host games perfectly and when the tournament is done, the stadium becomes a waste because it can’t be maintained properly. Qatar is hoping to avoid something like that by building Stadium 974.

All the other stadiums that will be used for the World Cup this year will also undergo massive changes after the tournament in a bid to reduce waste. 6 of the 8 stadiums will have their capacity reduced by half and some parts will be converted into malls, libraries, etc.

Stadium 974 has already hosted 6 games during the FIFA Arab cup tournament and during the World Cup, it will host another 6 games.
