Heading to The Headies?
Once known as the formerly ‘Hip Hop World Awards’, The Headies which debuted in 2006, has over the years become one of Nigeria’s most anticipated annual entertainment Award events.
This year’s nominees were recently announced and by the 4th of september, 2022; all roads will lead to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta for the 15th Headies.
Here is a list of five things you should expect:
1. Zazu in Atlanta
As you may have already heard, our very own Zazu crooner, Portable, has bagged not one but two nominations in the 2022 Headies Awards. This year’s awards ceremony will be taking place in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
If there’s one thing that we know about Portable, it’s the fact that he never disappoints when it comes to giving us premium entertainment. Best believe he’ll give us something to talk and laugh about.
Plus we’re sure he’s already started practicing how to speak with an American accent.
2. Over 30 Award Winners
The Headies has become one of Nigeria’s most anticipated annual entertainment Award events. With categories like Best Afrobeats Single Of The Year, Next Rated Artist Of The Year and Producer Of The Year, this year’s awards has over 30 categories.
This means over 30 ‘lucky’ artists will emerge as winners and will go home with one (or more) of The Headies golden plaques to show for it.
3. Drama
What’s an award ceremony without Violence? And no we’re not talking about the slap. Remember the 2015 headies when Wizkid brutally snubbed Eva Elordia’s fiance? Eva’s fiance was up on his feet with his arms open and ready to be embraced; however, wizkid (who later claimed that he honestly didn’t see him) walked past him and hugged Eva instead.
What about the Don Jazzy-Olamide clash? Olamide blew his top when Mavins’ Reekado Banks–and not YBNL’s Lil Kesh–was announced the winner of the Next Rated Artiste Category.
We can’t forget how he later announced that Lil Kesh was their own winner, dropped his mic (literally) then threw his red cup on the stage.
Talk about Drama! 2022 please be nice–or not.
4. A 2022 Bentley:
This year’s nominees for the coveted ‘Next Rated Artist’ Category are Ayra Starr, Lojay, Ruger, Zinoleesky and BNXN formerly named Buju. In addition to the Headies plaque, whoever emerges the winner will drive home with a brand new car.
Now this is where it gets interesting: we’re not talking about just any car, we’re talking about a 2022 Bentley Bentayga–luxury at its finest.

5. Disappointment/Tears
While we can all agree that every nominee–whether they actually win or not–is a winner, not everyone will go home with an award plaque.
During the ceremony tension will build, nominees will hold their hearts in their hands and wait for their fate.
For every one nominee who will jump up in victory, there will be five others whose hearts will sink in vanquish. There will be tears of joy and tears of disappointment.
All in all, permit us to say: ‘Breakfast will be served, but in an honourable way’.
