A record-breaking performance for Nigeria at the games

Team Nigeria’s exceptional performance at the 2022 Commonwealth games has ensured that they made history at the games and put Nigeria on the map. Prior to this year’s games, Nigeria had only managed to win 11 gold medals in a single commonwealth game but in this year’s games Nigeria won 12 gold medals and ended as the highest ranked African team in the games.

Team Nigeria won gold medals in Athletics, Para-athletics, Weightlifting, Wrestling, and Powerlifting. All the gold medals won at this year’s games for team Nigeria were all won by Female athletes. It is safe to say that Nigerian women are taking over. 

A total of 35 medals were won by team Nigeria in this year’s games: 12 gold medals, 8 silver medals, and 14 bronze medals. Nigeria finished the games in the top ten of the medals table. 

The Minister of Youth Development and Sports, Sunday Dare, has sent congratulatory messages to the team on their historic outing in Birmingham, England. He described the performance as excellent, inspirational, phenomenal, commendable, and commanding.  He went on to say that he appreciates their commitment, sacrifice, confidence and patriotism.

He also revealed that there would be a presidential reception for athletes Ese Brume and Tobi Amusan at the presidential villa in Abuja.
