The legacy lives on!

Fela Kuti is widely considered an influence on many musicians today. Many artists, both in Nigeria and abroad, have been inspired by his music, either by sampling it or creating music in a similar style.

For example, American singer and songwriter Bilal Sayeed Oliver has sampled over 15 of Fela’s songs in two of his works. Similarly, J. Cole’s song “Let Nas Down” samples Fela’s song “Gentleman.”

In Nigeria, artists like Wizkid and Tiwa Savage have also been influenced by Fela. Even 2 Baba has said that Fela inspired his 6th studio album, Ascension.

When considering if the current artist Seyi Vibez is another Fela protégé, it’s important to look at his music and compare it to Fela’s style. As the saying goes, “by their fruits you will know them.”

1. Music Style

On his album Memory, Seyi Vibez showcases his mastery of Fela’s call-and-response style, often incorporating it into many of his tracks.

In the song IG story, for example, Seyi Vibez does a full-on monologue, similar to the style used in Fela’s Shuffering and Shmiling track.

2. Instruments Blend

Fela was way ahead of his time and was known for blending different instruments to create a unique sound.

Seyi Vibez is no different, he combines old-school elements with modern sounds, resulting in an addicting beat that is both retro and contemporary.

3. Lyrics

Fela was known for his acidic lyrics that addressed social and political issues. We can see that Seyi is steadily taking that path too, he uses his music to address the problems facing Nigeria today.

His lyrics are direct and to the point, cutting to the heart of the matter and addressing issues head-on.

4. A Nod To Diversity

To top it all, Seyi Vibez’s music nods to the diversity of both religion and ethnicity. Like Fela, Seyi Vibez has a deep spiritual side, and this is reflected in his music.

He celebrates diversity and promotes unity through his music, much like Fela did.

Seyi Vibez may yet not hold a candle to Fela but one thing’s for sure, he is truly a Fela protégé.
