Groups already shaping up!

The UEFA Champions league is never short of entertainment and drama and this matchweek wasn’t any different. For some managers it was their first champions league game with their new clubs and for some. It was another chance to redeem their team’s image after a poor start.

English club Chelsea didn’t have the best of starts under new manager Graham Potter. They were held to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge by Austrian league leaders Red Bull Salzburg. Red Bull Leipzig and their new manager Marco Rose also didn’t get the fairytale start they would have wanted as Real Madrid defeated them at the Bernabeu by 2 goals to nil even without star forward Karim Benzema.

Manchester City completed a comeback win against German giants Borussia Dortmund and Erling Haaland scored a stunning goal to seal his former club’s defeat on the night. Robert Lewandoski and Barcelona didn’t get the Haaland kind of luck as they were defeated by Bayern Munich at the Allianz stadium 2 goals to nil.

Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon defeated Tottenham Hotspurs by 2 goals to nil. German club Eintracht Framkfurt scored their first ever goal in the Champions league to clinch a 1 nil win against Marseille. Liverpool redeemed their image by defeating dutch champions Ajax by 2 goals to 1, it was a pretty tight game and Liverpool didn’t grab the winner until the 89th minute. Napoli are absolutely cruising in their group as they crushed Scottish club Rangers by 3 goals to nil and ended up at the top of the group with 6 points.

The two most shocking results of this round both came in group B where Spanish giant Atletico Madrid was stunned by German team Bayer Levekrusen. Leverkusen won by 2 goals to nil thanks to two late goals from Robert Andrich and Moussa DIaby which came in the 84th and 87th minute respectively. In the same group, Belgian giants Club Brugge were absolutely on fire as they dismantled Portuguese giants FC Porto 4 goals to nil at the Estadio do Dragao (Porto’s stadium). Three of the four goals came in the second half of the game. Messi, Mbappe, and Neymar were all on target for Paris St German as they cruised past Maccabi Haifa 3 goals to 1 despite conceding the first goal.
