To avoid jail time when you get to Rome, act like Romans!
The story of the Nigerian woman who tweeted about the illegal detainment of her fellow Nigerians by the UAE and later got sentenced to 1-year imprisonment is a sad and eye-opening one.
Truly, na condition dey make crayfish bend but it is also very important to familiarize yourself with the laws of any place you are visiting.
On this note, the Tribe has gathered some petty crimes that could get you jailed when committed in these foreign countries:
1. UAE
There’s a social media law (the one this lady broke) that prohibits you from making videos of people without their consent, taking videos at government buildings, military bases or even airports.
In Dubai, you can bag a fine of 130k dollars for cursing in public or displaying affection.
2. Singapore
Chewing gum is prohibited in Singapore, and so is selling or producing it. They also frown against littering public places and it’s no wonder that it is one the neatest places that ever existed.
3. Rwanda & Kenya
Rwanda and Kenya have zero tolerance for plastic bags or nylon bags as we call them over here. The same nylon bag that you would scold the pepper seller for not doubling is what can get you in jail in these two places.
4. France
In France, it is a crime to cover your face or force someone to cover your face.
5. The UK & US
You must pay to stream everything. Visiting piracy sites to download movies or songs will get you into very serious trouble.
6. Ghana
Ghana, like the UAE, does not tolerate anyone taking pictures without consent, especially near their military base or government buildings.
7. Germany
Things can go from 100 to 0 real quick if you are caught with a pepper spray can in Germany. Regardless of whether it is for self-defence, pepper spray cans are always misunderstood and you might not get a chance to explain before you are arrested.
Above all, familiarize yourself with the laws and customs of any place you are travelling to. May we not be disgraced.
