Monkeypox is on the rise!
A lot of Nigerians stopped paying much attention to the updates from the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) as the number of cases started to reduce and as the vaccine became available. Unfortunately, there is a new disease on the horizon that Nigerians should pay serious attention to and it is called “Monkeypox”.
According to updates from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the number of confirmed Monkeypox cases in the country has increased to 227, and also it has spread to almost 30 states in the country presently. The number of suspected cases now stands at 704 and so far 6 deaths have been recorded in 6 states in the country.
The 30 states that have recorded cases of Monkeypox are Lagos, Ondo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Edo, Adamawa, Abia, Delta, FCT, Imo, Anambra, Nasarawa, Ogun, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara, Kano, Gombe, Ebonyi, Oyo, Katsina, Cross River, Benue, Borno, Kogi, Akwa Ibom, Niger, Bauchi, Osun, and Kaduna.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO): Monkeypox is transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected person or animal, or a material contaminated with the virus. It can also be transmitted from one person to another by close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets, and contaminated materials such as bedding.
A monkeypox typically presents clinically with fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes and may lead to a range of medical complications
Vaccines used during the smallpox eradication programme also provided protection against monkeypox. Newer vaccines have been developed of which one has been approved for the prevention of monkeypox.
