Some teams are already feeling the brunt of the non-stop games!
The Mundial is getting closer and is just a couple of days away so all European league and cup fixtures are rounding up for the break. The Bundesliga, La Liga, and Serie were all in action while the Premier League was on break to make way for the Carabao Cup games.
The first round of the Carabao Cup this season came with so many upsets as a couple of Premier League teams were knocked out in this round. Everton lost scandalously to Bournemouth 4 goals to 1 and was knocked out. Brentford lost 6-5 on penalties to League 2 side Gillingham. Newcastle’s league form continued in the cup as they knocked out Crystal Palace on penalties.
Westham United were also Knocked out by Championship side Blackburn Rovers 10-9 on penalties after playing a 2-2 draw at the regular time. Wolverhampton Wanderers knocked out Leeds United. Premier League leaders Arsenal were shocked by Brighton and Hove Albion as they lost 3 goals to 1 at the Emirates stadium. The most surprising cup upset of this round
Nottingham Forrest put up a spirited performance to knock out Antonio Conte’s Tottenham side by defeating them 2 goals to nil. Graham Potter and his Chelsea side continued their woes as they were defeated by Manchester City 2 goals to nil and subsequently knocked out of the Carabao Cup.
In La Liga, FC Barcelona produced one of their best performances this season as they overturned a 1-nil scoreline to win the game against Osasuna by 2 goals to 1 with just 10 men. Top striker Robert Lewandoski was shown a red card early in the match and they had to play without a striker for the better part of the game. They remain top of the La Liga table. Real Sociedad defeated Sevilla by 2 goals to 1, Atletico Madrid’s woeful season continues as they lost to Mallorca 1 goal to nil.
In Serie A, Napoli’s fairytale season continues as they defeated Empoli by 2 goals to nil. Osimhen wasn’t on the scoresheet this time. AC Milan played a goalless draw with Cremonese, and Lecce produced an unbelievable performance to defeat Atalanta 2 -1. Roma played a 1-1 draw with Sassuolo, Fiorentina defeated Salernitana by 2 goals to 1. Inter Milan destroyed Bologna by 6 goals to 1. Napoli is still top of the league with Milan, Lazio, and Inter in the second third, and fourth respectively
In Bundesliga, Borrusia Dortmund dropped points again as they lost 2 nil to Wolfsburg. Bayern Munich seems to be in form again as they mauled Werder Bremen by 6 goals to 1. Sadio Mane picked up a knock in that game and will miss the world cup. Union Berlin played a 2-2 draw with Augsburg while Schalke 04 defeated Mainz by 1 goal to nil. It was Schalke’s first league win since September 2022.
Bayern are now comfortably top of the Bundesliga table, Union Berlin in second, Freiburg in third, and Eintracht Frankfurt are fourth on the log.
