Which clubs were in action?
The world cup is fast approaching and that only means that the football games will be coming thick and fast without breaks till November. Two top leagues in Europe had midweek games between Monday and Thursday. Although Premier League teams were in action, Arsenal had their fixture postponed because of their Europa League tie with Dutch team PSV Eindhoven. The match was rescheduled to Thursday after they missed it a few weeks ago because of the funeral of the late Queen of Britain.
Arsenal managed to secure all 3 points against PSV Eindhoven thanks to a lone goal from Granit Xhaka. In the Premier League, Crystal Palace returned to her winning ways against Wolverhampton Wanderers as they won 2 goals to 1 while Nottingham Forest played a goalless draw with Brighton and Hove Albion.
Southampton defeated Bournemouth by 1 goal to nil, our own Joe Aribo could only manage 60 mins in the game before he was subbed off. Newcastle defeated Everton by 1 goal to nil thanks to a delightful goal by Miguel Almiron. Liverpool seems to be back on track after their victory over Manchester City during the weekend. They defeated Westham United 1-nil thanks to a first-half headed goal from big-money signing Darwin Nunez. It was his first goal at Anfield for Liverpool.
Chelsea could only manage a goalless draw against fellow London side Brentford while Manchester United cruised to a 2-nil victory against Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspurs. Manchester United dominated the game from start to finish and probably had the best performance under new manager Erik Ten Hag. Despite not playing, Arsenal remains top of the league, Manchester City remains second, and Tottenham, Chelsea, and Manchester United occupy third, fourth, and fifth respectively.
In La Liga, Sevilla seems to be back on track after firing their previous manager Julien Lopetugui and hiring Jorge Sampaoli. They haven’t lost any game under Sampaoli yet and they managed to get a 1-1 draw against Valencia. Former Manchester United striker Edison Cavani got the goal for them. Atletico Madrid also got a 1-1 draw against Celta Vigo. Their former superstar striker, Radamel Falcao, scored a late-minute penalty for Celta Vigo to ensure they seized at least a point from the game.
Real Madrid despite having three goals disallowed by VAR still cruised past Elche by 3 goals to nil. Federico Valverde, Marco Asensio, and Ballon D’or winner Karim Benzema were all on the scoresheet for Los Blancos. Barcelona
Real Madrid is still top of the league table, Barcelona is second while Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid are 3rd and 4th respectively.
