League results from over weekend

The World cup is just a few weeks away and the fixture congested month of October is almost over but seems like some clubs are already losing steam ahead of the November break.

After the mid-week fixtures, the Premier League resumed on Saturday with exciting games. Nottingham Forrest stunned Liverpool with a 1-nil victory in the first game of the weekend thanks to a goal from Nigerian striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, who used to be a Liverpool player.

Everton cruised past Patrick Viera’s Crystal Palace, 3 goals to nil and Nigerian midfielder, Alex Iwobi, was man-of-the-match as he registered two assists for the first and third goals. Manchester City continued from where they stopped by defeating Brighton and Hove Albion by 3 goals to 1 and ensuring Roberto De Zerbi was still without a win for Brighton since becoming manager of the side. Erling Haaland scored two goals in the game taking his league goal tally to 17 goals and 3 assists in less than 15 games. Manchester United secured a 1-1 draw with Chelsea thanks to a late-minute header from big-money signing Casemiro.

Aston Villa returned to their winning ways after sacking their manager Steven Gerard. They dismantled Brentford by 4 goals to nil. The club has since appointed Spanish manager, Unai Emery, as their new gaffer. League leaders Arsenal had their winning streak blighted by a 1-1 draw with Southampton. Leicester City seems to have found their feet again as they thrashed Wolverhampton Wanderers 4 goals to nil. Tottenham’s woes were compounded as they lost 2 goals to 1 to a rejuvenated Newcastle. Newcastle are now in fourth place on the league table.

In Serie A, Juventus secured a 4-nil victory against Empoli. AC Milan defeated Monza by 4 goals to 1. Inter Milan edged past Fiorentina in a dramatic 7-goal thriller that ended 4 -3 in favour of Inter. Torino had a shock 2-1 victory against high-flying Udinese. Nigerian defender, Ola Aina, got his first-ever Serie A goal for Torino in that game. Lazio cruised past Atalanta 2 goals to nil and Napoli edged one past Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma thanks to a lone goal from big Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.

In La Liga, Real Madrid’s unbelievable league form continued as they thrashed Sevilla 3 goals to 1. FC Barcelona also won their game against Athletic Bilbao by 4 goals to nil. Atletico Madrid defeated Real Betis by 2 goals to 1 thanks to a brace from Antoine Griezmann. Real Madrid are still top of the table, Barcelona are second and Atletico Madrid move up to 3rd.

In Bundesliga, Bayern Munich defeated Hoffenheim by 2 goals to nil and that victory moved them up to second on the table. Freiburg defeated Werder Bremen by 2 goals to nil and moved up to third on the table. Frankfurt defeated Borussia Monchengladbach by 3 goals to 1 and move up to 4th on the league table. Borussia Dortmund dismantled Stuttgart by 5 goals to nil but could only place them 5th on the table. Union Berlin remains top of the Bundesliga table despite their 2-1 defeat at VFL Bochum.

In Ligue 1, PSG defeated Ajaccio 3 goals to nil thanks to a superb performance from Lionel Messi who delivered two assists and a goal in that game.
