European leagues are back!
It was a big weekend for football fans as three of the top four leagues in Europe resumed the new season with the first round of matches. While some fans were delighted with their clubs bagging massive wins during the first game week, some were left angered and disappointed with their club’s poor display.
In England defending champions, Manchester City started the season on a very good note as they picked up a massive 3 points away at West Ham United’s London stadium. Their new big-money striker Erling Haaland scored both goals to give City the much-needed win. Chelsea also picked up three points against Everton thanks to a Jorginho penalty late in the first half. Tottenham were the biggest winners this weekend as they pummeled Southampton by 4 goals to 1. Arsenal cruised to victory against London rivals Crystal Palace as they won 2 nil on the night.
Manchester United continued their woeful performance from last season dropping points early in the season as they were defeated by Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford. New boys Fulham held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage. Newly promoted Bournemouth produced a stunning performance by defeating Aston Villa by 2 goals to nil all thanks o goals from Jefferson Lerma and new striker Kieffer Moore. Nottingham Forest on the other hand was defeated by Newcastle United..
In the Bundesliga, it was a routine win for most of the big boys on the first match week of the season. Bayern Munich cruised to victory against Europa League winners, Frankfurt, by thumping them 6 goals to 1. New signing Sadio Mane got a goal in the game. Borussia Dortmund also won their game against Bayer Leverkusen by 1 goal to nil thanks to a lone goal from captain Marco Reus. Wolfsburg and Borrusia Monchengladbach also got wins in their respective games. Newly promoted Schalke 04 lost their first game to Koln by 3 goals to 1 while RB Leipzig was held to a 1-1 draw by Stuttgart.
In France, defending champions PSG started the league season on a high by thumping Clermont foot by 5 goals to nil with Lionel Messi scoring an overhead kick goal. Monaco, Lille, Marseille, and Lyon all registered victories in their respective games.
