Starlink vs all the ISPs in Nigeria?
As long as you live in Nigeria, you must have had issues with Internet connectivity before. If it’s not MTN frustrating you, It’s GLO, Airtel, or Spectranet and the others.
For those that did their NYSC in very remote and rural areas, some of these Internet Service Providers(ISPs) don’t even have coverage there but that might just be about to change with the launch of Starlink.
Billionaire “Techbro” Elon Musk owns Starlink and he announced on his Twitter page that his company had been licensed to operate in Nigeria. These are some things you should know about the Starlink product as we await the launch.
How It Works
The kit comes with a Dish like your DStv and it also has a reuter. According to Starlink themselves, all you need to do is place the dish somewhere with a clear view of the sky. You can pretty much install the whole thing yourself.
Internet Speed
According to Starlink their average Internet speed is 100mbps and they boast of as high as 300mbps in good conditions. The average Internet speed in Nigeria is way below that.
Price
We don’t know if they would have a different plan for Nigerians but going by the prices in other countries where it is active. The thing is not cheap oh! The installation kit alone costs $599( 300,000+ naira) and for premium it costs even higher than that. Most definitely not affordable for the average Nigerian.
While it already look like Starlink has an edge over other service providers, we can wait to see how competitive it’s prices will be–that is what will determine it’s survival.
