Teams learn their fate in the Champions League!
Matchweek 5 was particularly exhilarating in the UCL as a lot of teams knew what was at stake for them if they eventually got defeated. In this match week, the fate of a couple of teams was also decided.
Chelsea defeated RB Salzburg by 2 goals to 1 in a rather thrilling game to confirm their spot in the next round of the Champions league. AC Milan also defeated Dinamo Zagreb by 4 goals to nil to hold on to the second spot till the last match week.
Real Madrid were condemned to a shock defeat by RB Leipzig in what was their first loss of the season in all competitions. Celtic also played a 1-1 draw with Shakhtar Donetsk. Madrid are through to the next round but there is still much to play for in the group for the remaining teams.
Manchester City played a goalless draw with Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla defeated Kobenhavn by 3 goals to nil but that victory didn’t help their course. City and Dortmund are through to the next round while Sevilla will drop down to the Europa league.
PSG dismantled Maccabi Haifa by 7 goals to 2 while Juventus were subjected to another defeat by Benfica in a 7-goal thriller that ended 4-3 in favor of Benfica. PSG and Benfica are through to the next round while Juventus drop down to the Europa league.
Napoli dismantled Rangers by 3 goals to nil to continue their 100 percent win record in the UCL this season. Liverpool also defeated AFC Ajax by 3 goals to nil to secure their spot in the next round of the UCL. Ajax unfortunately will drop down to the Europa league.
Porto left no stone unturned as they mauled Club Brugge 4 goals to nil. Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen played a 2-2 draw in what was the most dramatic ending to a game ever after a penalty was awarded to Atletico after the final whistle had gone. They eventually lost the penalty and that ensured Porto’s qualification to the next round. Club Brugge are also through to the next round of the Champions League with Atletico dropping to the Europa League.
Inter Milan needed to win against Viktoria Plzen to secure their spot in the next round and they did exactly that by winning 4 goals to nil. Bayern Munich were already through to the next round before the game against Barcelona but that didn’t stop them from dominating Barcelona and defeating them 3 goals to nil. FC Barcelona, unfortunately, drop to the Europa League for the second season in a row.
Frankfurt defeated Marseille by 2 goals to 1 while Tottenham played a 1-1 draw with Sporting Lisbon. Tottenham were denied a last-minute goal in that game that was ruled out by VAR. The game ended in a frenzy as Tottenham coach Antonio Conte also got a red card. The group is undecided yet as just 2 points separate the 1st from the 4th.
