Amapiano left and right!

Breakfast is painful, but imagine someone for something you pioneered. For context, imagine bringing Amapiano to Nigeria only to be told later that the importation of legendary Amapiano wasn’t your idea? You truly do not know pain until you have..*proceeds to cry a river.*

In case you missed it, here is why Amapiano has been getting a lot of press and tears:

How It Started

It all started from Wizkid’s Bad To Me. We all know who Wizkid is and that his latest work is Bad To Me. If you are yet to listen to it, it is an Amapiano based single that went from getting bashed to causing chaos.

You must agree that Wizkid FC is one the fiercest–if not the fiercest–fan clubs. So when non-fans accused Wizkid’s of doing a poor job with the hot cake genre of Amapiano, we knew it was about to be a bloodbath.

It finally happened when self appointed accolade police, Roza pepper of Twitter, a 30BG stan, complained that this Wizkid-Amapiano thing is an example of how many celebrities have been using the 001 privilege to further their blow without giving Davido his flowers.

According to her, it was Davido who brought Amapiano from SA in 2020. Cap.

Then, DJ Maphorisa Tried To Set The Record Straight

DJ Maphorisa is a South African music producer and yeah, a custodian of the Amapiano by birth so one would expect that his response would be to assert ownership over Amapiano. What did he do? The total opposite.

I mean, Roza capped without getting her facts right but this DJ Maphorisa’s response wasn’t it. See:

Kabza & Maphorisa was the first to put Wizkid n Burnaboy on a amapiano song Sponono dat was a historical moment 3 years ago, research before tweet. Also it was the first time Wiz n Burna jumped on a same song together. Let it sink in ????❤️

Never have I seen a Tweet defeat so many purposes at the same time. Birthright, you did not secure, and you still ended up carrying a war that is not your own on your head.

Davido Responded

Because of this unsolicited  by DJ Maphorisa in response to the 30BG fan, Davido came in with a machine gun by tweeting: You’ve never liked me y? I’ve always been good to you …. Anyways ! AWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY NOW!!!!!! Chu chu chu chu chu”

*presses the shalaye button and walks away*

DJ Maphorisa realized his misstep but it was too late–hot oil had touched everyone including Uncle May D.

May D?

If far fetched was a situation, it would be this one but then again, hot oil. So, Uncle May D of Ile Ijo felt disrespected and decided to set the youngins straight on who the senior is in Amapiano.

According to him, his song ft Oskido in 2013 is the first rendition of Amapiano in Nigeria. It didn’t quite go well for him because he got schooled on what an Amapiano really is and how his 2013 song does not fit in. Burn!

To top it off, the rude children of 30BG switched from “who brought it?” to “who made it popular?”, a wicked shade to Uncle May D’s not-so popping music career. I read somewhere that all is fair in war and love, so switch!

Then, The Amapiano Confusion

At this point, it was already chaotic, everyone just wanted to defend their fave, even if it took capping (lying) to achieve that.

It was crazy but thanks to all the music gurus stationed at every Twitter post, many people’s warped sense of Amapiano was reset before it got out of hand. Great job, guys!

Who Won Though?

Find somewhere to sit, will you? Good. Mayorkun won. Mayorkun, who didn’t even come to war  at all won this face-off with his 2020 single “OF LAGOS”

E shock you? Well, me too.

Apparently, all the songs that were used as points in the beginning of this discussion had one or two limiting factors. Sponono, for example, was truly released in 2020 but Nigerians did not really feel it at the time. Get Down by May D ft Oskido in 2013 is an AfroHouse genre not Amapiano.

Other 2020 Amapiano songs include Zinoleesky’s Kilofeshe, Equipment By MasterKraft, Kiddominant’s EWallet, Woman by Rema, and Davido’s Lala and I got a Friend (ABT) but Mayorkun was the first to jump on it in April 2020.

What Is Amapiano Though?

If only there were more people like  you, the world would be a peaceful place. Amapiano is a South African music genre that consists of jazz, deep house, and lounge music marked by synths, airy pads, and wide percussive basslines.

Closing remark: Wizkid is yet to say Pim.
