Which one did you miss?
This year, on the 7th of October, 437 Nigerians and non-Nigerians were awarded the National Honours on the basis that they have contributed to the nation’s growth in their various endeavours.
While we feel the timing of the ceremony itself is a little bit off, it has been a tradition since 1964 and Buhari is mandated to confer it before he leaves office.
Now to the drama that happened at the event:
1. Bukola Saraki Was Not Invited
Remember this guy? Bukoloa Saraki who had a case of false declarations of assets that took 3 years and 70 lawyers to clear? He didn’t get an invite, although he deserves it by his status as a senate president and a former governor.
Apparently, there’s some sort of beef between Saraki and Bubu based on political rivalry. Many people pointed the act out but it seems Bubu is not one to be a bigger person because up till now, nothing has been said about the omission.
2. Teni Did Not Kneel To Collect Her Award
After watching the video, we concede that what Teni did is not good. Whatever the case may be, she should have prostrated and licked the president’s shoe to show respect and heartfelt gratitude for being one of the select few that got the National honours.
How rude of Teni.
3. Ezra left Bubu’s jaw hanging
Ezra Olubi is the co-founder of Paystack and he was awarded national honours too. However, his palazzo jiggy pants, frilly top with his black painted nails and lips blood-red had the president in shock.
We can only hope he recovers soon.
4. Chimamanda Ngozi Rejected The Award
Oh yes, she did. Respectfully and quietly, without a fuss. Not that she is the first person to do so though. Her mentor, Chinua Achebe, rejected the National Honours twice in his lifetime because he believed that the government in power at that time was not doing its job.
Wonder if there’s a pattern?
5. Fayemi’s Name Was Removed
The former governor of Ekiti state, Kayode Fayemi had his name on the previously leaked list but had his name missing from the second list for reasons unknown to us.
We are genuinely confused about what the criterion of choice is at this point.
