Nollywood To the World!
Being the largest film producer in Africa in terms of volume and the second largest in the world, the fast-growing Nollywood industry has experienced tremendous growth and improved production in 2022.
Nollywood filmmakers keep churning out more of their works. Here are some exciting titles to watch out for in a few months:
1. Palava
The plot centres on a high-life musician in the middle of a resurgence–one whose life and family are turned upside down due to a scandal revealed on the eve of his 60th birthday. The lead role, Osa Wonda Idehen, is played by the Nollywood veteran, Richard Mofe Damijo, whose character has five beautiful daughters and a big love for women.
Starring alongside the lead actor will include; Bisola Aiyeola, Iyabo Ojo, Mercy Aigbe, Linda Ejiofor, Gideon Okeke, Beverly Naya, Beverly Osu, Jemima Osunde, Omawunmi Megbele, Neo Akpofure, Chinedu Ikedieze, Segun Arinze, Buchi Ojieh and Eniola Badmus.
The Inkblot Production is set to open in the cinemas on December 9, 2022. It was co-written by Anee Icha and Naz Onunzo and directed by Niyi Akinmolayan.
2. Ijakumo
The plot of Ijakumo revolves around the daughter of a powerful spiritualist who is hellbent on destroying the life of her former lover–a renowned pastor of a mega-church–who jilted and left her to die. She figures out a way to carry out her revenge with the help of the woman her former lover lusts after; one who happens to be a stripper and choir leader.
The lead role of Asabi will be played by award-winning actress and movie producer Toyin Abraham alongside Kunle Remi, Lolade Okunsanya, Lilian Afegbai, Eso Dike, Olumide Oworu and others.
Scripted by Kehinde Joseph, the principal photography started on 5th September 2022 and is set to screen in the cinemas on 23rd December 2022
3. Gang of Lagos
The plot is built on the story of a group of friends who each have to navigate their destiny, growing up on the bustling streets and neighbourhood of Isale Eko, Lagos. The filmmaker, Jade Osiberu, hinted that she was inspired to write the scene while shooting a scene from Gidi Up season 3 (a Ndani TV series) on a rooftop in Isale Eko.
Being one of Amazon’s Prime video original, pictures reveal that the three friends will be played by Tobi Bakre, Adesua Etomi- Wellington and music star, Chike. The entire cast is star-studded and includes Zlatan Ibile, Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, Eniola Badmus, Iyabo- Ojo, Yvonne Jegede, and Muiz Sanni of Ikorodu Bois.
Directed by Jade Osiberu, and co-produced by Kemi Lala Akindoju and Akin Omotosho, the movie is set to premiere on Prime Video soon.
4. Becoming Abi
A six-episode TV series is set to debut on Netflix on 28th October 2022. Becoming Abi was created, written, co-directed and produced by Bolu Essien, who also plays the role of the titular character. The cast includes Stan Nze, Biodun Stephen, Seun Ajayi, Akah Nnani, Julianah Olayode, Idowu Philips, Ifeanyi Kalu, Benita Okojie and Opeyemi Akintunde.
The plot centres around Abi, a millennial, who walks her way through challenging times while working with an advertising agency in Nigeria. She has to learn to deal with her new boss and also handle friendship and love at the workplace. The show promises to be exciting as it chronicles Bolu Essien’s work life as a creative professional in one of Nigeria’s most prestigious advertising agencies.
5. Adieu, Salut
Adieu, Salut is one of the six winning stories of the Netflix and UNESCO African Folktales Reimagined Competition and the only selection from Nigeria and West Africa. The low fidelity and science fiction story is about a young girl who fights for control over her fate, set in the not-so-distant future where everyone but the people of a small Fulani village has uploaded themselves into a virtual world, the short sci-fi story unfolds into a familiar but different world.
Written and directed by Koreze Azeez, the movie is produced by Kenneth Gyang’s production Company (Cinema Kpatakpata) and is set to premiere on Netflix sometime soon.
6. Battle On Buka Street
Produced by FilmOne entertainment and the newly unveiled Funke Ayotunde Akindele Network, the movie is set to be suspense-filled and hilarious, the movie poster contains the catchphrase “This Christmas, Gbas…gbos!!!”
Not so much information has been released about the movie but the trailer reveals that the cast includes Funke Akindele, Mercy Johnson, Sola Sobowale, Bimbo Ademoye, Tina Mba, Nkem Owoh and others.
Directed by Funke Akindele and Tobi Makinde, the movie is set to start screening in the cinemas on 16th December 2022.
