The GOAT of Tennis says goodbye

As far as a lot of people are concerned Serena Williams is the greatest female tennis player of all time. If we’re being honest that might not be far from the truth at all, she truly is a tennis legend. In a recent interview with Vogue magazine, she confirmed that she is finally ready to walk away from the sport. In the lengthy interview, she stated that one of the many reasons she is leaving the sport is to concentrate on her family which she considers a huge priority in her life now.

According to her, deciding to retire has been one of the hardest decisions of her life especially since she had to choose between tennis and her family. Serena stated how gutted she was that she had to choose at all between the two. She went on to mention that she disliked the word “retire”, explaining that she is not going to call it a  “retirement” but an “Evolution”. She said, “I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from Tennis”.

In the interview, Serena also disclosed how her sister, Venus Williams–who is also a tennis legend–had a huge impact on her tennis career. She said that being in her sister’s shadows early on in her career helped her learn from her sister’s mistakes and strengthen her own game. She mentioned how her and her sister’s success has inspired black women around the world.

According to her, after “evolving” away from Tennis she is going to pay more attention to her capital venture firm Serena Ventures which she started a few years ago. According to her, it is a small but growing firm scattered around Texas, Florida, and California. 78% of the portfolio of the firm is made up of companies started by women or people of color. In fact, it was an all-women business until recently.

The U.S Open which starts on the 29th of August will probably be the last tournament she will participate in.
