Naija is flying high at the commonwealth games
When the commonwealth games started a few days ago, we hoped that Team Nigeria will do well, currently, they aren’t just doing well, they are breaking longstanding records in the games.
After the first round of medals won in the first couple of days in weightlifting, Team Nigeria has gone on to win other gold medals in various events as well.
In Discus, Goodness Nwachukwu put on a spectacular show at the games by breaking two consecutive world records and also clinching the gold medal. In her very first attempt at the games, she threw a distance of 34.84m which was instantly a world record.
In her second attempt, she threw a distance of 36.86m which was instantly the new world record. After all the attempts, she clinched the GOLD medal for Nigeria in women’s Discus F42-44/61-64 while also breaking the world record for that event.
Folashade Oluwafemiayo in the Women’s Heavyweight Powerlifting is another exceptional Nigerian at the event. She also won a gold medal and shattered the world record in that category.
Apparently, the world record she broke was hers, which she set at the 2020 Tokoyo Olympics, 2 years ago. She lifted a total of 152.5 kg at the Olympics to set a world record then.
However, she has absolutely bettered the category in the commonwealth games this year by lifting a total of 155kg to clinch GOLD. Team Nigeria also won the silver medal in this category after Bose Omolayo lifted a total of 145kg to seal the second spot.
In the men’s powerlifting lightweight category, Innocent Amadi clinched the bronze medal by lifting 190 kg in his second attempt. In the Heavyweight category of men’s powerlifting, Ikechukwu Obichukwu went on to clinch the silver medal by also lifting 190kg.
Two Nigerians also clinched the gold and bronze medals in the Women’s Discus event; Chioma Onyekwere clinched the gold medal and Obiageri Amaechi clinched the bronze medal.
More medals are still expected from Team Nigeria in other events before the end of the games in a couple of days but so far, it has been a largely successful outing for Team Nigeria.
