The Labour Party’s appointing of Doyin Okupe as the party’s Vice President “placeholder” a few weeks ago, generated a lot of buzz. However, on the 8th of July 2022, Labour Party officially unveiled their candidate.
His name is Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed. He is 53 years old and is a member of the popular and renowned Baba-Ahmed family of Zaria. He is an economist and a politician. According to the Presidential Candidate Peter Obi, Datti Baba-Ahmed was chosen not just because he is young but also because he has a lot to offer.
Here are a few things you should know about him:
Education
Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed attended the University of Maiduguri in Borno state where he acquired a bachelors degree and a Masters degree in Economics.
He earned a PhD from the University of Westminster and also has an MBA degree from the University of Wales, Cardiff.
Work Experience
He served at the University of Agriculture Abeokuta, Ogun state and after completing his service year he then proceeded to work at Baze Research and Data Services Ltd as a Projects coordinator. He also worked as a second officer in the Nigerian Security Printing & Minting Company in Lagos.
He was also a banking officer at First Bank of Nigeria before subsequently returning to Baze Research, becoming the Managing Director and eventually deciding to delve
into politics.
Political Career
He became part of the political system in Nigeria at a young age. He contested and won the House Of Representative seat for the Zaria Federal Constituency, Kaduna state in 2003. He was in the All Nigeria People’s Party(ANPP) at the time. He was part of the lawmakers who opposed President Olusegun Obasanjo from running for a third term in office.
He unsuccessfully ran for the Presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2018. Citing his refusal to buy delegate votes as his reason, he pulled out as a gubernatorial aspirant in the Kaduna PDP primaries for the 2023 elections and left the party.
Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed is also a renowned Philanthropist and one of his most notable projects is the Hope Alive Foundation which campaigns for the post-service economic survival for Youth Corp members that suffered permanent disability during their service year.
He is also passionate about good education and that inspired his decision to establish two universities in Nigeria. Baze University and Baba Ahmed University in Kano state.
