The soaring Super Eagles!
I know I speak for the majority of us if I say that losing our World Cup ticket to Ghana a few months ago still hurts; well, it’s all in the past now and the Super Eagles are back to winning again.
Amongst the many new faces and new developments in the squad, one notable change is the appointment of a new gaffer, Jose Peseiro. He was appointed a few weeks after the disappointing result against Ghana while Coach Austin Eguavoen was laid off.
Peseiro has managed a couple of top Portuguese clubs like Sporting CP and FC Porto, he has also managed a top African club in Al Hilal.
After two defeats in his first two games since his appointment, the Super Eagles have finally given him his first victory. The victory came against Sierra Leone in the 2023 AFCON qualifying game 1. The Super Eagles are grouped with Sierra Leone, Sao Tome and Principe, and Guinea Bissau in group A for this qualification round.
It was a tightly contested affair in Abuja. The Eagles came from behind to win the game 2-1 thanks to goals from Everton’s Alex Iwobi and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen. Both goals were scored in the first half of the game. A couple of players picked up knocks in the game and it is left to be seen if they will be available for the next game in a couple of days.
Although it was a shaky performance from the Eagles, it was nice to watch them win again and we hope the performance will be better against Sao Tome and Principe on the 13th of June.
