Crazy tings are happening!

26-year-old Temilade Openiyi better known as Tems is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and producer who has been making waves in Nigeria’s alté music scene–and beyond.

The last couple of years have seen Tems go from the new kid on the block to a chart-topping global sensation. She wasn’t even joking when she sang ‘Crazy Tings are happening’.

Here are five times that Tems proved that she’s International (baby!):

1. Featuring In Wikid’s Made In lagos Album

A Wizkid-Tems collaboration is what birthed ‘Essence’; Wikzid’s fourth single from his M.I.L album. Tems velvety vocals were part of the reason ‘Essence’ was not just an ordinary hit, but a global hit! It became the first Nigerian song in history to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, it got a grammy nomination and even a Justin Bieber remix!

2. Featuring In Drake’s Certified Lover Boy album

In 2021, Tems collaborated with Canadian rapper and singer Drake for the song ‘Fountains’ which was the 17th track on his Certified Lover Boy album. Tems mentions having started listening to his music during her teenage years. What she doesn’t mention, however, is how she went from listening to Drake’s music to making music with him.

If that isn’t a goal, I don’t know what is!

3. Making Barack Obama’s Favorite Music List

Tems (and Wizkid) with their breakout hit ‘Essence’ made Barack Obama’s favorite songs list for the year 2020! Apart from being the 44th president of the United States and the country’s first black president he is also one of the world’s most influential figures.

So Yes! It’s a big deal!

4. Bagging International Endorsements

In December 2021, Tems was unveiled as a brand ambassador for American premium clothing brand, Tommy Hilfiger. Just about two months later, she is at it again with another International deal, but this time with sportswear brand, Reebok.

Way to go girl!
