Poof! That’s how 2021 went before our eyes. It went by so fast and was quite a wild ride. Besides the fact that we completed a second year with COVID-19, there was a lot that went down last year.

Here are the unusual things that came with 2021. Dig in 😋

 

2021

  • Charlie Charlie Challenge

January came and the world celebrated the end of a crappy, pandemic 2020. Little did we know that for some, nothing was learnt. A demonic game called Charlie Charlie turned into a TikTok challenge which became viral. Playing this game involved crossing two pencils to create a grid on a piece of paper sectioned into yes and no. The player would then invite the demon Charlie to play the game by reciting, ‘Charlie Charlie, are you there?’ Charlie confirmed his arrival by moving the pencil. Maka why?

 

  • Silhouette challenge

January was still not done with us. The children of man started offing their clothes under red light under the guise of a TikTok challenge for a Doja Cat’s song titled ‘Streets’. The trend however died a quick death when men started manipulating the videos to show the nudes without the red silhouette. Animals!

 

  • Gorilla Glue Girl

Edges laid, waist snatched. In February, slaying went wrong. A black American, named Tessica Brown, ran out of her Got2b glue and ventured out to find a replacement. However the stores had run out of that and so she bought the gorilla glue spray. The edges were indeed laid but with finality. She discovered this to her horror when she was ready to switch up her look. All homemade efforts to get rid of the glue from her hair proved abortive and Brown had to go into surgery. 

 

  • CBN Serves Tech Geng Hot Breakfast

CBN issued a ban on all cryptocurrency transactions in February only to create their own digital currency in October. E shock you? No let am shock you. The crypto ban also came with a list that flagged happening babes with steady alerts as fraud suspects.

  • Lil Nas X Gives Satan a Lap Dance

What is Lil Nas X if not a talented gay agenda persevering? The singer who became known for his song titled ‘Old Town Road’ served in the music video for hit song, “Call me by your name” where he danced on a pole and wiggled his butt on Satan’s lap. As though the homophobes did not have enough to be mad about, he performed the same song on the BET award show and kissed one of his backup dancers. 

 

  • Twitter Ban

In June, the minister for information, Mr Lai Mohammed, announced a nationwide ban on Twitter. The Nigerian youth saw this as retaliation from the government for the #ENDSARS movement back in 2020. The platform was used to coordinate and trend the protest globally. News of the ban was surprisingly conveyed with the same platform and falls in line with the on-and-off social media regulation bill. 

 

  • Keeping Up With The Kardashians (KUWTK) Ends

An end to this popular reality show was one thing we did not see coming. KUWTK was a reality show that gave the world a view into the private lives of the Kardashians with 20 seasons. The show served viewers the delight of watching the family (especially the women) cuss, fight, cry and splurge money on TV. The end to the reality show which was announced back in June shooed the public out of their private lives. 

 

  • Temple Drama

June wasn’t done with us as the unbelievable reached the house of the Lord. Gospel singer, Tope Alabi publicly condemned a fast-rising song titled Oniduro by Adeyinka Alaseyori, another gospel singer. This caused an uproar and many celebrities added to the wahala by siding with Alaseyori. Some even went a mile farther to condemn Tope Alabi for doing such to her daughter in the Lord. As a comeback, Alaseyori called Tope ‘our mummy’ and then sang the controversial track together with ‘You are worthy’ (a song by Mummy Tope) on her Instagram live. Few weeks later, Tope Alabi issued an apology to the other singer and that was that.

  • Cubana Doings

June ended and it was July’s time. There was little to no drama and it was looking like a peaceful month till Obi Cubana decided to celebrate his mother’s burial with 400 cows bought and donated by friends. Not only did it cause cows to suddenly become scarce, it also drowned Machala’s birthday which was on the same day.

 

  • Milk Crate Challenge

A saying goes, “those whom the gods wish to destroy, they first make mad.” Well, the TikTok challenge that went viral in August was nothing short of insane. It was called the milk crate challenge or simply the crate challenge. 

Rules for the challenge involved stacking crates like stairs and then climbing them to the last stack. Only most people did not make it to that last stack. Most people who participated in the milk crate challenge fell and suffered injuries. While this was funny and meme-worthy, medical doctors came out en mass to discourage its continuity because of the medical risk involved. But, this did not deter some human beings as they continued the challenge.

TikTok stepped in by pulling down videos of the challenge. And thus the milk crate challenge came to an end online.

 

  • Snake in Toilet

November was not the month for people who love to press their phones on the toilet at all. News of Nigerians who suffered snake bites on the toilet broke and the consecutive weeks were a nightmare. However, people shared different tips to safely poop without being bitten by a snake to calm troubled souls. Tips included the shedi balabala and face your fear methods. What a month.

 

  • Omicron

What is Omicron if not Corona persevering? News of another corona variant named Omicron broke in December. People expressed concerns over another lockdown but this was not the highlight. The European countries tried to rewrite history by claiming the origin of the variant was from Africa and because of the similarity in the names, Omarion got some unexpected media attention.

 

2021

#TheGoodStuff serves up some light reading with 2 shots of humor and a dash of sarcasm. This edition gives a year-end review of the unbelievable things that happened in 2021.
