The competition may be over but these Euro2020 memories live on
The EURO2020 ended in July with many incredible moments and experiences to savour during the month-long competition. Italy emerging as the eventual winners made for an even tastier grand finale.
Not withstanding the great anticipation that came with fans finally returning to the stadium, we would like to bring you a list of memorable highs and lows during this European competition that made it stand out from the others.
1. Coca-Cola’s snub from Cristiano Ronaldo
Most people know that Ronaldo is a world icon and usually has an influence on everything he comes in contact with. So it wasn’t a surprise when his apparent shade of Coca-Cola. where he moved aside the coke bottles during a press interview. made them allegedly lose $4billion. Advising people to drink more water probably didn’t help either lol.
2. Christian Eriksen’s collapse
The soccer world stood still when Denmark star playmaker Christian Eriksen fell to the ground without any contact and stopped moving for some minutes. It was a moment that left both fans and opposition bewildered as medics rushed onto the field to attend to the ailing player who had apparently suffered a cardiac arrest.
This one event sparked a surge of unity as countries despite their differences aligned to show their support for Eriksen. Some may even argue that it sparked Denmark’s surge to the semi-final of the Euro2020. Thankfully he was soon discharged from the hospital and reunited with his family.
3. An ‘Own Goal’ fest
This Euro2020 tournament witnessed a record 11 – ELEVEN! – own goals. This is more than all the own goals scored in this competition since its inception in 1960 (9). “Own goal” should probably be given the golden boot award as it surpassed all other individual players!
4. 6 Minute Madness
For a total of six minutes England as a nation had the probability of playing three different national teams in the Euro2020 finals, which was absolutely mental. This was possible because the score-line of the matches between France vs Portugal and Germany vs Hungary kept on changing at intervals. Just imagine it this way: 9:23pm- ENG vs HUN…9:26pm- ENG vs POR… 9:27pm- ENG vs Ger.
5. 3 seems to be the lucky number
This tournament had a slightly different format from the former as the top four teams that finished third in the group stage were allowed to proceed to the next round of the competition. This was not the fascinating thing, rather it was the fact that 3 of those third placed teams managed to reach the quarter final stage ahead of football powerhouses like France and Portugal. I guess 3 seems to be the new lucky figure.
6. It almost came home
England started like a house on fire, scoring in the 2nd minute to the utter dismay of the Italians. At this point it looked like the Euro2020 trophy was coming home until… it didn’t. To make matters worse the games went to penalties, where all of England’s dark-skinned players missed their shots with worrying ripple effects #SayNoToRacism.
#TheGoodStuff serves up some light reading with 2 shots of humor and a dash of sarcasm. EURO2020 was definitely one for the history books, in this edition we took remembered the best and worst of it.
