The LBGTQ+ community has made us more aware of the wide spectrum of identities that humans can fall under. You could even say that there are as many variations of identities and terminology related to sex and romance as there are people. 

So to broaden your perspective and normalize terminology surrounding these often controversial issues, here are some unpopular terms related to the identities surrounding sex and romance.

1. DEMIROMANTIC

This is used to describe someone that only has romantic feelings for people that they have a strong emotional connection with. This seems easy, but we cannot dispute the fact that some people can be romantic with anyone, some can meet someone by the roadside and be romantic with that person. For the demiromantic, there has to be an emotional connection. 

2. BIROMANTIC

While this is giving bisexual vibes from the name, it is not the same. For the biromantic, there is nothing sexual involved, instead the person is only romantically attracted to people of either gender and not necessarily sexually attracted. This may be what some people feel when they say “I thought I was bisexual, but on getting close, I realized I couldn’t go through with it”

3. AUTOSEXUAL

This is when a person is sexually attracted to themselves. Yes, it happens. And before anyone calls it narcissism, there is a massive difference. Narcissists thrive on people worshiping them and seeing other people as lower beings. Autosexuals can be attracted to others, even be sexual with other people, but they prefer to pleasure themselves.

4. BIPHOBIA

Phobia means fear or aversion, and in this context biphobia refers more to aversion towards or intolerance of people who are bisexual. This could be because they think bisexual or biromantic people are confused people or are people who cannot be monogamous. Biphobia also falls in line with homophobia when people believe bisexual men are just simply gay while bisexual women only have sex with women for the benefit of men. 

5. GENDER FLUID

This is a term used to describe people who identify as different genders at different times. Sometimes they feel like a woman, sometimes they feel like a man, sometimes they may not feel like either.

6. NONBINARY

Anyone that identifies as one, is someone who does not identify with the binary concept of gender. They describe themselves as embodying both or neither.

7. ASEXUAL

Asexual people are people who have little or no interest in sex although may still be interested in romantic relationships.
