There’s always a market for enhancing sexual experiences
Introduce yourself and tell us what you do?
My name is Dolapo Lawal and I own PleasureCityLag (TokoTobo). I’m an online Nigerian sex toy seller lol.
How long have you been in business and what inspired you to start?
It’s been about a year since I started. I realized that a lot of people want to improve their bedroom experience but they’re put off by the idea of walking into physical stores and buying sex toys from nosy and judgmental people, so I take the stress off them.
How accepted is this business in Nigeria?
Nigerians pretend as if sex is a forbidden topic, but we all have it don’t we? So, why act brand new and continue having boring sex when there are so many ways to spice things up? I mean, what is worth having is worth having well. Even people that accept the business pretend they don’t. People usually do not follow my page or drop comments after buying the products for maybe fear of stigmatization.
How have family members, friends and strangers reacted to your line of work?
The people that matter to me are very supportive of the business. Though some were indifferent at first, they eventually came around.
What are the do’s and don’ts in this line of work?
Simply deliver what was ordered and it is due. Avoid delivering the wrong or damaged product so test the products before you send them out. There is always going to be profit in honesty.
What type of people patronize you?
All genders and age groups patronize me but I believe millennials and gen z patronize me the most and it’s equally split between men and women.
Describe an awkward customer experience
A male friend of mine, married by the way, that I told about my sex toy business decided to buy from the IG page. The thing is, he actually did not know I owned the business. When I initially told him about it, he told me that using sex toys is a sin. Next thing, he took a screenshot of my WhatsApp status and went to the business’ IG page to buy it discreetly. I was just looking at him.
LOL! Tell us another one
One lady saw a toy on my Story and proceeded to buy it. After the toy was delivered, she sent a message saying it looks smaller than what she saw. I was confused because there is a video and I had also written that the toy is small and discreet in the description. She said she would call me out to Gistlover and co so I just apologized for the miscommunication.
Tell us about two best-selling products?
Wand vibrator!!! – This one is a toy in the hands of a novice, but a machine in the hands of an expert.
Rabbit G-spot vibrator – Even a novice will work wonders, just make sure the right lubricant is available.
What’s the most expensive toy you sell?
The most expensive (and most explosive) toy I sell is the Rabbit G-Spot Vibrator for N28,000 but trust me, others sell it for at least N35,000.
What is the right way to maintain a sex toy?
-
Do not share your toys with your friends. It is completely unhygienic.
-
There are different kinds of lubricants for different toys, some are suitable for water based lubes, while some are only right for silicon based lubricants. Find out what works for your toy.
-
Make sure you charge your toy regularly. Do not let it go off for long or it might never come on again.
-
Cleaning after every use should be common practice. If you don’t clean them right, you might put an infected toy in your ‘jajaina’. Find the right way to have it cleaned because different toys have different requirements..
Parting shot?
If you think using sex toys on yourself is great, then try using one with a partner.
