Back to Back World Cup final for France!
The World Cup is nearing its end and for what it is worth, we can say unequivocally that it has been a memorable competition for every viewer. Unlike in the other stages of the competition, the semi-finals of the World Cup didn’t provide any major upsets as it was pretty straightforward.
In the first game of the semi-finals, Argentina took on Croatia. Before the game, it felt like a very good tie on paper but as they say in football, the results on the pitch are all that matter.
Argentina dismantled Croatia by 3 goals to nil thanks to a sensational Lionel Messi performance which saw him score a goal that extended Argentina’s lead. Manchester City’s striker, Julian Alvarez, also had a sensational performance as he scored 2 more goals to ensure Argentina will play their first World Cup final since 2014 where they lost to Germany in the final.
For Croatia, it was just a comedy of errors and they could barely fashion any chances of their own. It probably is Luka Modric’s final World Cup appearance but they can hold their head up high as they will still participate in the 3rd place game a day before the final.
Argentina’s captain Lionel Messi now has 5 goals and 3 assists and is in contention to sweep almost all the individual awards at the Mundial when the tournament is over.
In the second semi-final game, the African record-breakers Morocco took on World champions, France. Although Morocco had had a sensational run in the tournament this year, France was still the heavy favourite and it took them just 5 minutes to breach the Moroccan defence thanks to a sensational goal from defender Theo Hernandez.
Morocco was forced to make an early change in the game because of a recurring injury to captain Romain Saiss and he was replaced by Selim Amallah. After the change, they played much better, and midfielder Azzedine Ounahi began to find spaces in the French midfield but they still couldn’t score a goal.
For the better part of the second half, Morocco was on the front foot but the French defence didn’t budge. Late in the second half, France scored another goal to ensure the tie was sealed in their favour. The goal was scored by Kolo Muani with his very first touch of the game after coming in for Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele.
In the third-place match, Morocco will take on Croatia and the final will be between France and Argentina.
