The Mavins’ 10th chapter!
Mavin Records is ten! To celebrate Mavin All Stars released a 10-track album called Chapter X that features its ten artists. Talk about details. The album’s two pre-releases, Overdose and Won Da Mo were bangers so we naturally expected the other eight to be fire.
The complete album was released today, the 2nd of December, and it features Don Jazzy, DJ Big N, Ayra Starr, Bayanni, Ladipoe, Johnny Drille, Crayon, Magixx, Boy Spyce and Rema. It should be mentioned though, that at no point did all ten of them feature on the same track.
Won da mo, had the highest features, with all except Don Jazzy and DJ Big N finessing their vocals on a track that is arguably the best track on the album.
For some reason, when we think of Mavins, we are reminded of the saying ‘Soldier Come Soldier Go, But Barracks Remain’—with Mavins as the barracks and its artists as the soldiers. Back in the day, we had wonderful talents like Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, and Korede Bello sprout as Mavins artists. They may have gone, but Mavins has remained and has stayed true to its vision. Big ups to Don Jazzy for keeping the record label going, it is no easy feat.
Asides from the aforementioned bangers Overdose and Won Da, the songs Amina and Alle are fire jams.
Losing You, is a soft song that may not be everyone’s cup of tea but will resonate with people who are into calmer music–plus they featured the right artists.
We loved Boy Spyce’s verse in Won Lele. We felt it when he said, “Now thema dancing to my reggae and my blues and my dancehall, Singing word for word to my music they call Jargon.” Not many people rate Boy Spyce and it’s similar to how Rema started. But, more often than not, your talent will make room for you.
Ladipoe raps quite well, sadly that genre of music isn’t well appreciated in this part of the world.
We expected Don Jazzy to take charge of the song, Jara, especially seeing as his name appeared first on the track. However, all he said was “I no know why I de for this track o, Oya come sing make I go back o” and that was the song’s last line.
DJ Big N should consider being a hypeman, by the way.
The last track on the album, You, is a love song and is the most soothing track on the album. They ended the album in grand style with all the artists rolling out their catchphrases–I guess we can say they all featured in this track.
In this album, we got to hear Don Jazzy actually sing not just hum and we discovered that Boy Spyce’s voice is so giving that if one isn’t careful, one could even mistake his voice for Ayra’s.
All in all, this album is a solid body of work: 8/10
