From trash to fashion!

We can all agree on the fact that environmental pollution is no passing fad, and that all the trash we litter everywhere is dangerous to the environment and will cause irreversible damage if care is not taken.

That is why when individuals or organizations go the extra mile to provide a solution to society’s problems, the Tribe wastes no time donning its town-crier hat to spread the news and appreciate them.

A while back, we talked about Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola: The Woman Turning Trash To Cash. Today, we talk about Green Finger and how it holds the Trashion show to fight pollution. Dive in!

First, What Is The Green Finger Wildlife Initiative?

Green Finger Wildlife Initiative, founded in 2012 by Chinedu Mogbo, is a conservation project that aims to preserve and protect wildlife in Nigeria.

They support their local community in cleanups, intervene in/settle wildlife conflicts, and provide jobs. The main part of their work is providing sanctuaries for wildlife in Nigeria.

Now, isn’t that refreshing? A community of people who realize that by protecting what we have now, we also protect our future. Very refreshing.

So How Do They Connect With Trashion show?

Before we get into that, if you haven’t guessed it yet, trashion is from the words trash and fashion and it has been a thing for over a decade now

Now, to how Green finger connects to the Trashion show.

Simple. Green Finger is concerned with environmental pollution so it works with teens and young activists to clear jagbajantis off the streets of Lagos (the most polluted state in Nigeria).

Then, it hosts a trashion show where these teen models and activists grace the runway donning outfits made from the items that would normally go in the trash. Yup.

Needless to say, this initiative is hitting all the right notes – for the agbaya who have no problem flinging coke bottles/puff puff nylons everywhere, the waste management officials whose impact is yet to be seen, and, you know who else.

Big ups to the teens for reminding every one of us, in such creative ways, about the importance of keeping the environment clean. Great job!
