Qatar is a west Asian country with a high-income economy backed by one of the world’s largest natural gas and oil reserves. Since its controversial announcement as the host country of the FIFA World Cup 2022, with a budget of around $220bn the country–with a budget of around $220bn– has witnessed several infrastructural developments in a bid to accommodate the 1.5 million anticipated visitors.

1. Souq Waqif

Souq Waqif is a marketplace with buildings that date back to the 20th century. It got renovated in 2006. The market sells traditional garments, spices, handicrafts and souvenirs.

The marketplace faces a water body which is divided by a road and a park, it also has a 980-seat indoor theatre and a yearly spring festival which hosts theatricals, acrobatics and musical performances.

2. Museum of Islamic Art

Built on a highland off an artificial projecting peninsula, the museum is the first of its kind to feature over 14 centuries of Islamic Art in the Arab states of the Persian Gulf. In preparation for the FIFA 2022 World Cup, the museum has witnessed renovation with an increased number of more than 1,100 newly acquired exhibits on display.

It represents Islamic art from three continents over 1,400 years with collections which include metalwork, ceramics, jewellery, woodwork, textiles, and glass obtained from three continents dating from the 7th to the 20th century.

It is one of the world’s most complete collections of Islamic artefacts with items originating in Spain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, India, and Central Asia.

3. Katara Cultural Village

Located in Doha, it lies on the eastern coast between the West Bay and Pearl. The buildings and facilities at Katara were deliberately arranged to reflect the country’s cultural and architectural heritage.

Katara has an open amphitheatre, an opera house, a multi-purpose cinema, a multi-purpose conference hall, a beach, and a market and is home to offices of many Qatari organizations.

4. Aspire Park 

Covering an area of 88 hectares, it is a great place to have picnics and family outdoors while overlooking the Aspire Tower (a 300-meter modern hotel).

The park has different features such as beautiful fountains, playgrounds for children, and other fun features including the only lake in Qatar, a small hill, a coffee shop, and various kinds of trees, both rare and common.

5. The Pearl

The Pearl is a manmade island featuring Mediterranean-style yacht-lined marinas with residential towers, villas and hotels. It also offers a luxurious experience with premium designer boutiques and showrooms. It is home to modern dining spots with exemplary culinary experiences.

The Pearl also stands out for its wide range of landscaped gardens, it sits on a 4 million square metres of reclaimed land with a lavish community lifestyle.
