‘Japa To Prime Video!’

Since its launch in Nigeria on August 2022, Amazon Prime Video has consistently delivered in not only showcasing content from all over the world but also in incorporating Nollywood movies. Due to a large number of productions in the industry, not all films make it to the cinemas, besides, not all movies are designed to go the cinemas.

In a bid to compete with other top streaming platforms in the country, Amazon Prime Video (Nigeria) has developed a surviving strategy of acquiring the rights to screen some top Nollywood movies that never had a cinema run.

Here are 6 of these movies exclusive to Amazon Prime Video:

 

1. La Femme Anjola

The psychological – thriller film noir revolves around a young male stockbroker whose life is turned upside down when he falls for a female fatale married to a wealthy gangster.

Directed by Mildred Okwo, the movie stars Rita Dominic and Nonso Bassey.

 

 

2. Eyimofe

Set in Lagos, Eyimofe (This is My Desire) follows the story of Mofe, a factory technician and Rose, a hairdresser, on their quest for what they believe will be a better life on the foreign shores. Tragedy and fate intervene as the two Nigerians try to better the lives of their families. Time passes, wounds heal and they learn that the future they desperately seek can be built at home.

The film is made up of two chapters called Spain and Italy. The movie questions the current japa pandemic.

 

 

3. Loving Amanda

The romantic story tells the story of a young woman’s journey from brokenness to love, healing and redemption. The movie is also a heart felt screen adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same title by the author, Laju Iren, who also doubles as the movie producer.

 

 

4. The Milkmaid

The movie highlights the story of a Fulani milkmaid who confronts religious extremists in rural sub-Saharan Africa in a quest to locate her missing sister, but efforts to recapture her disrupted past prove complicated.

The milkmaid was the last official submission of the Nigeria Official Selection Committee for the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category at the 93rd Oscar awards in 2021.

 

 

5. Country Hard

The hyperlink crime-drama explores a day in the lives of seven strangers as their paths interconnect in a way that may alter their lives forever. Set in a small part of Lagos on an ordinary day that ends with life-altering consequences for all.

The movie shows how one meeting can change everything and it was the first outing of Paul Utomi as a writer-director.

 

 

6. Tainted Canvas

The movie follows the story of Rayo, a London-based Nigerian Artist who puts her life on hold and is prepared to confront her repressed trauma when she is required to go back to her hometown in order to see her dying mother.

Tainted canvas highlights the effects of childhood trauma and abuse and how that manifests in a child’s life further down the line but also shows the power of confronting that abuse for better or worse.
