Aso-Oke in style!
Lagos Fashion Week came with Bottega boots on the rage and some new designers making their debut. Different types of styles- street style, Alté etc, were explored but the ones that caught the tribe’s eyes are the aso oke/akwete fits that dominated some designers’ collections.
These pieces are comfortable, creative and a total turn-up for your Owambe game, in our opinion. Do you like it?
1. This Metallic Silver Suit
Denrele (who needs no introduction) was spotted walking the walk in this piece created by Toyin Lawani at Lagos Fashion Week. From the colour and the gold embroidery to the Senrere frills at the lapels and pants, this is well-balanced on a 100.
If you are like Denrele, who also believes that tongues were made for wagging, then you have a winner in this suit.
2. This Look From Babayo official
There are three wins for you with this piece. One: there are pockets! Then, the length is acceptable anywhere (it will keep the aunties off your back at Owambe’s) and then, the colour combo.
No way you are not going to be the talk of the party–absolutely no way!
3. This Short Mustard Yellow Gown
Almost every Nigerian mom has this pattern of aso oke so excuse me when I say I never imagined this aso oke as any other than as a gele and a shoulder mantle.
That’s why this mustard yellow gown is such a shocking but pleasant discovery. That feather appliqué detail is conspicuous and yet lifts a mighty per cent of the piece’s beauty.
4. This Pink Tiny Strapped Gown
This mix of Fuchsia and baby pink tiny strapped gown for Green Access was designed to blow minds and it did.
Simple and hottt!
5. This B/W Combo of Aso Oke Top on A Silk Skirt
Will you look at that? No. Just take a look at this white top giving “I can switch to ashawo on your cue”. So many things to pick apart for admiration but what’s the use of stating the obvious?
6. This Palazzo Jiggy
Who says you can’t do the street thing while still preserving the culture? I will assume they are yet to see this piece ‘cos what?!
Here is a look for when you intend to go all out. Fire!
7. This Mgbeke Gown Spiced Up With Akwete Corset
Finally, all those calf-length gowns that were banished to the bottom of the wardrobe can return from exile for this look. It doesn’t look like stress and for us, that’s a style goal.
#Unsolicited is a segment for reviews and opinion pieces. This edition showcases eight aso oke fits that can turn your Owambe game up.
