The Selection Committee’s Oscar decision still stands

It has been a great year for the Nigerian Film Industry, especially with its amazing stories travelling around the world. However, it’s no longer news that the films: Elesin Oba; The King’s Horseman, Anikulapo and Ageshinkole were rejected by the Nigeria Official Selection Committee (NOSC). This decision generated some controversy among the committee members and the Nollywood audience at large.

Amidst the controversy, The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences (Oscar Organizers) proceeded to extend the date of the final submission with a statement which reads “The International Feature Film Executive Committee reviewed the issues regarding the Nigerian Official Selection Committee (the Selection Committee on behalf of the country of Nigeria) and has granted an extension of one week with the deadline of October 21, 2022, at 5:00 PM Pacific Time. The entire approved Nigerian Official Selection Committee will be required to all reconvene and make a final determination regarding a submission to the International Feature Film category for the 95th Academy Awards. The final determination must be delivered by the approved Nigerian Official Selection Committee chair and co-chair.”

The statement above led to a 2nd ballot session by the committee to review their decision and the come-back of some of its members who had earlier resigned which includes; Shaibu Husseini and Mildred Okwo, a journalist and filmmaker respectively.

This session was held on Thursday, 20th October 2022; unfortunately, the decision stands that no Nigerian film is going to Oscars 2023 by the majority of the committee members taking a “ No Revote” decision. Six of its members voted for “Revote” while nine opted for “No Revote” as the always majority carries the vote.

There has since seemed to be chaos in this committee as the Oloture & Blood Sisters Director, Kenneth Gyang also announced his resignation on Twitter recently.

We can only keep our fingers crossed till it is time for the Oscars 2024 selection.
