It breaks our heart that a post like this has become more than necessary, however better safe than sorry. There is a heightened level of insurgency right now in Nigeria. Try as hard as we may, traveling from one place to another is simply inevitable. With these safety precautions, you can at least feel safer and prepared for unforeseen circumstances.
These tips will come in handy whether you are moving across cities or countries:
1. Share Your Location
Share your location with people you trust. Social media apps like WhatsApp and Google Maps have features that allow you to share your location with people.
We recommend that you do this only with reliable and trustworthy people. Not people who claim they don’t like picking calls. This tip has saved many people from the jaws of kidnapper and murderers.
2. Stay Up-To-Date On Security-Related News
Like we said before, there is a heightened level of insurgency right now in Nigeria. Make it a habit to stay on top of security news ahead of any planned trip. It helps a great deal.
3. Stay Alert And Aware Of Your Surroundings
You should also be very observant and mindful of the road traffic as you go. Watch out for suspicious activities outside as well as the in vehicle you are traveling in.
If you sense you are in danger, make or fake a phone call. Expressively state which car you are in and your estimated time of arrival. This will most likely deter the suspect from harming you.
4. Have Emergency Helplines And Contacts On Speed Dial
As much as no one wants to be in a situation where they need to call for help, it is always good to prepare beforehand for such situations.
Put your emergency contacts and official helplines on the speed dial. The national emergency number is 112.
5. Travel With A Registered Intercity Bus Company
Although the roadside buses are relatively cheaper, we recommend that you travel with vehicles in registered motor parks.
With a registered transport company, you can at least be assured the drivers are licensed to drive, and are traceable.
6. Try Not To Travel Too Early In The Day Or Too Late In The Night
You should not travel alone too early in the day or too late at night. If the journey will take long hours and extend into the night, consider including stops in your trip. Try to lodge in a hotel and resume your trip the next day.
7. Always Prepare Well For Your Journey
You should always have your phone well charged and with enough airtime or data. Also, invest in a power bank if your phone has a weak battery. This is to ensure you that are reachable (and can reach people) at all times .
8. Carry Protective Gadgets And Tools With You
Perfumes can cause enough damage to the eyes of your potential assaulter, enough to give you a window of escape. There are also customized everyday items that conceal knives, tasers and the likes. Ensure these items are not illegal where you are traveling to though.
9. Pray For Protection
We are only pencils in the hands of the creator. Be sure to ask for grace every time you step out. No one knows the future.
