Fun facts about tennis legend Serena Williams

Serena Williams started playing active Tennis when she was 14 years old. She is what we can call a generational talent in Tennis. From as early as 1997, when she was 16 years old, she was already ranked as the 99th best Tennis player in the world. Her first Grand Slam singles win came in 1999 when she was 19 at the U.S Open.

Here are seven fun facts about Serena Williams:

1. Her father played a major role in who she is today and what she has achieved. Serena and her sister Venus were both homeschooled by their father Richard Williams from Elementary school up until High school. He did this so that both sisters could focus totally on playing tennis.

The move most definitely yielded good results because both sisters went on to become two of the best ever Tennis players in their generation.

2. Prior to becoming a Tennis legend, Serena attended fashion school at the Art institute of Fort Lauderdale. After she left fashion school, she launched a line of evening wears that it didn’t exactly do well. She returned back to Tennis Full-time thereafter.

In 2018, she launched her clothing line called ‘SERENA” and she said the line was confident women.

3. She started training for Tennis started when she was just 3 years old and she even attended Rick Macci’s tennis academy. She was so much of a good player that by the time she was in her mid-teens she was actively playing professional tennis and already upsetting ‘big names’ in tournaments.

4. Apart from being one of the best tennis players of all time, Serena is also known for her Philanthropy. She is the co-founder of the Serena Williams Secondary School that opened in Kenya in 2008.

She has also donated to the development of schools in parts of Africa and Jamaica.

5. Apart from English which is her major language, A lot of people don’t know that Serena also speaks fluent French. Apparently she learnt the language when she was little.

She also speaks a bit of Italian and Spanish.

 

 

6. Although she has just 23 grand slam titles, Serena has over 73 singles titles in her entire career. Her sister Venus has just 49. Both sisters have won 22 titles while playing the doubles together including 3 olympic gold medals and 14 grand slams.

7. In 2021, she served as one of the executive producers for the movie “KING RICHARD” which was an American sport biographical film about her father Richard Williams. The movie was nominated for numerous awards especially the Golden Globes and the NAACP image awards, the Academy Awards and the critics choice awards.

Popular Hollywood actor, Will Smith, played Serena’s father in the movie and he won an academy award for his performance.
