This is a cold zobo

Even though we are in the era of carbonated drinks and well-packaged juices, some locally brewed drinks are still top-rated and widely consumed among many Nigerians.

These popular drinks are sweet enough and packed with nutrients that keep the body healthy. They are quite easy to make, majorly because their ingredients are locally sourced.

So, let’s take a look at six of these local drams which Nigerians love. These liquid refreshments range from milky, fruity, and alcoholic drinks. They made it to the list for their popularity among Nigerians.

  • Zobo (Hibiscus) Drink

Which other drink should start the list if not a cold zobo🙂? Hibiscus tea, also called ‘zobo’, is so popular that it got a slang coined from it.

It is a reddish and nutritious drink. It can be made in the comfort of your home or bought at a pocket-friendly price from online vendors and street hawkers. A refreshing glass of zobo drink is packed with nutrients that help reduce blood pressure and weight.

  • Kunu

Kunu is a creamy refreshing drink that originated in Northern Nigeria. Depending on the source, we have Kunu Zaki (made from millet), Kunu Aya (made from Tiger nut), and Kunu gyada (made from groundnut).

This milky drink is a healthy alternative to animal milk, making it a good option for lactose intolerant people. It reduces the risks of diabetes, and cholesterol levels and aids digestion. This drink requires no sweetener, however, dates and bananas can be added to it.

  • Palmwine

Unlike other drinks on the list, palm wine is not prepared, rather it is tapped directly from palm trees.  It has a sweet taste and no alcohol when freshly tapped. When left for some time, the wine ferments and becomes alcoholic. Palmwine is popular in Eastern Nigeria as a ceremonial drink.  It is best enjoyed with pepper soup, peppered snail, or bushmeat.

However, palm wine is more than just a refreshing drink. it improves vision, hair, skin, and fights cancer.

  • Nigerian Chapman

If ‘switch it up’ was a drink, it would be Nigerian Chapman. That is because you can achieve a flawless Chapman version both as an alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink.

Chapman is a cocktail drink with a nice blend of fruits in it. Whichever version you are going with requires fruits such as cucumber and pineapple, a color base like; blackcurrant, Fanta, Coke, or even Sprite.

You will most likely find it gracing venues like bars, restaurants, parties, and even churches.

  • Soya milk drink

Soya Milk is another popular milk drink Nigerians love. It is made from soybeans, and is also very delicious. Did you know the popular brand, Vitamilk, is just packaged Soya milk?

Soya milk is good for weight loss and the prevention of prostate cancer.

  • Fura de Nunu

Fura de Nunu, a local type of yogurt, is quite popular in the northern part of Nigeria. It is commonly sold by Fulanis.

It is a combination of fermented cow milk (nunu) with ground millet (fura) mixed with spices.
