The sports world in 2023

One of the exciting aspects of sports is the annual occurrence of major events. In 2022, it was the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, a highly successful event that exceeded expectations.

Similarly, 2023 promises to be just as thrilling with a plethora of sports events to watch out for, but listed below are five significant ones to keep an eye on:

 

1. The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup

The 13th edition of the Cricket World Cup will be hosted by India. This is the fourth time that India will be the host of the competition. but the first time the country will host the tournament solely. 

The competition will be contested by 10 teams, and India has an automatic qualification spot because they’re the hosts. England is the defending champion of the competition. The competition is scheduled for October 2023.

2. The FIFA Women’s World cup

Hosted by Australia and New Zealand, 32 teams will participate in the tournament, with the United States Women’s Team as the defending champions.

The Nigerian female national team, the Super Falcons have also qualified for this tournament and they are in group B with Canada, the Rep of Ireland, and host Australia. The competition is billed for July 2023.

3. FIBA Basketball World cup

The Basketball World Cup for men’s teams will be hosted in five cities across Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. 32 countries will compete for the trophy. Cote D’Ivoire is the only African team in the competition for now but there will probably be more after the remaining 15 teams that will compete are determined.

The tournament is scheduled for August and September 2023.

4. The Rugby World cup

The last edition was hosted in Japan in 2019 and it was won by South Africa. This year’s edition will be hosted in France and it will be contested by 20 teams. Two teams will be representing Africa at the tournament Namibia and South Africa. South Africa is one of the most successful teams in the history of the competition, they’ve won the title 3 times. 

The competition is scheduled for September and October 2023.

5. The UEFA Champions League Final

The annual football event that is widely considered as one of the most watched sports events in the entire world is the final of the competition. Last year, the final was contested between Real Madrid and Liverpool football clubs, with Real Madrid emerging victorious with a single goal.

This year, the final will be held at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey. The teams that will be competing for the trophy are currently unknown, as the competition is still ongoing. The game is scheduled to take place on June 10th, 2023.
