Are these lyrics toxic or nah?

As a self-appointed and benevolent custodian of Nigerian music, here are two things I have noticed in 2022 so far: musical artists have been flying toxic lines right past our heads and everyone is lowkey becoming Shakira.

You missed the second observation and I’m not here to talk about it either. So for your edification and lyrical growth (my primary concern), here is a list of Nigerian songs with toxic lyrics, painstakingly compiled from the goodness of my heart.

1. Dior by Ruger

“ Me nah get time for love, definitely not, me get girls around to come warm me up”

This line came after the lady confessed her feelings to him. I mean, we know a roll between the sheets does not mean wedding bells, but did he have to be so blunt and ruthless ?????

2. Girlfriend By Ruger

“I know what I’m doing is so wrong, but since no man can focus, we definitely don’t give a f*ck”.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, as you can see, Ruger has proven to be a repeat offender on this list and as such gets the badge for Satan’s errand boy.

I would cut him some slack but he “knows what he is doing is so wrong”

3. Ashawo by Fireboy DML

“If I cheat on you, I’m sorry, if you cheat on me don’t worry”

See, toxic lyrics are a great recipe for surviving quarter-life crises but this line right here makes me wanna hug the guy and maybe the girl, or the both of them because they sound like they could use one.

I mean, for people who have an open relationship, they really must be going through it.

4. Go home by Blaqbonez

“Go home, I don’t want that thing no more, Don’t call my 234. Cause some other hoes need my love”.

The only good thing about this one is that the toxicity was made known from the jump not hidden in waist whining or beats (shades fully intended, Ruger)

Nevertheless, these bars are cold but then again, it’s Blaqbonez – nothing new.

5. Watawi by CKay

“She tell me what are we? I tell her, we are what we are” and “Me tell her what she wanna hear?” If you feel like I have been reaching, just take a look at these antacid-requiring lines from WATAWI by CKay.

Come on. Even if he wasn’t ready to DTR (define the relationship) he shouldn’t have done her like that.
