Fine butter bread!
Riches to rags with a sprinkle of comedy has always been a popular recipe for most Nollywood blockbusters. Seeing that Breaded Life had the same trope, I am guessing I wasn’t the only one who had pictured the expected ending in our minds. Fellow predictors-in-chief, e shock me too.
As anyone who has seen this movie would tell you, nothing prepares you for the ending. Kudos to the cast and crew, I was on an emotional ‘jangilova’ all through.
Written and directed by Biodun Stephen, Breaded Life is that dramedy that came and snatched our wigs. Here are a few of the lessons we learned:
1. Control Your Anger
Anger never births good things–and again, Sunmi was a perfect example. After an argument with his mom (Tina Mba), he drove out in anger, got involved in an accident soon after and landed himself in a coma. Not everyone will be as lucky as he was, coming out of a coma after just 16 days.
Things could have been worse; he could have lost his feet or had his skull cracked open and his brain matter scattered like rotten tomatoes on the road. Do you get it or should I continue?
2. No One Knows Tomorrow
Breaded life is just a testament that death is not the only thing that can change your life. For Sunmi (Timini Egbuson), it was him waking up one day to find all of his loved ones suffering from Sunmi-nesia. They all could remember each other but couldn’t remember him. One second he was this rich kid throwing the wildest house parties, the next minute he was carrying bags of flour in a bakery.
Granted, this exact of thing will probably never happen in real life but there’s a bitch called life and she happens to everybody, in different ways–no one knows tomorrow.
3. Be Diligent With Your Work
Though layered under comedy, the way Iskilu (MC lively) lost his job is no joke. A family man who didn’t know his place, encouraging bad behavior to gain favors.
Sadly the Sunmi that would have saved him needed to be saved himself. Take your job seriously, the streets are not smiling. Getting you replaced is not as hard as you may think.
4. Loyalty Pays
Sunmi’s loyalty to Jugunu (Lateef Adedimeji) was unquestionable. After his fall from grass to grace, Sumni with the help of Todowede (Bimbo Ademoye) got a job at Jugunu’s bakery.
Apart from working hard and becoming a great asset, Sunmi offered to partner with him to expand his business. The partnership ended up being mutually beneficial to them both. He could have played smart and kept his business expansion ideas to himself, but he chose a more noble path.
His loyalty paid off, he became his own boss towards the end of the movie. Putting off someone’s candle doesn’t make yours shine brighter.
5. Be Kind
No act of kindness is too little, you never know what the person is going through. Todowede, was kind enough to bring a total stranger of the opposite sex under her roof.
One of our favorite scenes was when she threatened not to spare the rod if Sunmi’s “rod” decided to misbehave. She helped him get back on his feet again.
