AMVCA Biggest Wins!
The eighth edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCAs) took place on the 14th of May and the internet has been abuzz with the hashtag #AMVCA22.
This year a total of 33 award categories were announced amongst which only 12 of these categories were open to voting from the public. Each category had an average of 7 nominees and just one winner.
In our eyes, each and every one of these nominees is a winner. Having one’s work acknowledged and found worthy to be nominated for an award as prestigious as an AMVCA is a big win whether the award is eventually bagged or not.
From Mr Funny’s content creator win to Denola Grey’s best dressed award, here are five AMVCA wins that we’re still not over yet:
1. Funke Akindele Bello (Best Actress in A Comedy-Omo Ghetto: The Saga)
Omo Ghetto: The Saga was a jaw-dropper, we’re talking over two hours of comic goodness and laudable acting performances by Nollywood’s A-Listers.
While it is true that Funke Akindele never disappoints, she completely blew our minds with the way she took up and seamlessly portrayed dual roles, playing contrasting twins Lefty and Ayomide.
In one scene she’d be Ayomide, gracing our ears with clean Queen’s English and in the next she’d be playing Leftty, speaking undiluted pidgin English and leading the Askamaya Bees to a street war.
Hers was definitely a well deserved win.
2. Oga Sabinus (Mr Funny – Best Online Social Content Creator)
For some reason we can’t seem to get this picture out of our heads: An awestruck Oga Sabinus scuttling across the stage to receive his award.
It’s funny how his content has the same effect on us; it’s hilarious, relatable and can’t seem to leave our heads even after we’ve put our phones down.
Mr Funny is funny; effortlessly and naturally so. Since he broke into the scene in 2019, his short and comical online videos have been a source of joy to millions of people all over the world.
He definitely deserved this hooge win.
3. Broda Shaggi (Best Actor in A Comedy – Dwindle)
Samuel Perry better known as Broda Shaggi is a master of many trades, a man of many accolades and most recently an AMVCA winner.
It easy to see how Broda Shaggi puts his heart and soul in whatever he is doing; whether it is comedy, acting, songwriting or singing. So it’s no wonder why he won the AMVCA for the Best Actor in A Comedy category for his role in the movie Dwindle.
He played Duta, a comical, sometimes troublesome and mostly extra character.
4. Ramsey Nouah (Best Director – Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story)
With about three AMVCAs to his name, Ramsey Nouah is without a doubt one of Nollywood finest actors. However, when he made his debut directorial role with the multi-award winning supernatural thriller Living in Bondage: Breaking Free, he proved that he makes an equally great movie director.
In the 8th edition of the AMVCAs Ramsey bagged yet another award for his second directorial role in the movie Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story.
What can we say? Ramsey is a veteran in the game. Well deserved.
5. Denola Grey (Best Dressed Male)
Fashion consultant, actor and media personality Denola Grey is one person that you are most likely to never catch unfresh. Denola’s outfits are always screenshot and runway worthy.
It is no shocker that he brought his A-Game to this year’s AMVCA’s red carpet with his beaded three-piece ATAFO ensemble. He went on to bag the Best Dressed Award for the male category–and it still was no shocker.
